Recent advances in computational electromagnetics (CEM) algorithms, including the newly developed CBFM (characteristic basis function method) (Mittra R. and Prakash, V.V.S., IEEE APS/URSI Int. Symp., 2003), have made it feasible to solve large scattering problem employing the MoM (method of moments). However, the maximum size of MoM matrix that can be handled on a PC is still limited by the maximum available RAM. A CBFM-based technique is proposed for the solution of a class of large scattering problems using a PC. We begin with a smaller problem that can be conveniently solved on a PC, and localize the problem in the subdomains by using tapered impedance terminations to construct the CBFs, to be used later for the original "large" problem. Finally, we synthesize the far field contributions of the CBFs to derive the solution to the original problem. Numerical examples demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed simplified CBFM technique.
