From the point of view of pattern recognition, a new fault location method based on frequency analysis is proposed in this paper. It samples the transient voltages at the sending end and the transient currents flow through the transmission line during the fault at first and analyzes the phase relation between voltage and current at different frequency with fast Fourier transforms (FFT) algorithm. The signal reversal rule of the impedance angle at different frequency is related with the length from the sending end to the fault location. As a result, the impedance angle at different frequency can be used to locate the fault. The accordance of the theoretic analysis and the simulating results indicates the feasibility of the method
