A discussion is given on the implementation of a database query language subsystem and its programming interface with the multimedia database system. The aim of the developing database system is to provide high level extensibility and customizability to support various applications. The authors provide a set of functions of OODB as an extensible toolkit called from application programming languages. An SQL-like query language for OODB query function is based on this toolkit. The language system is mainly for ad-hoc query application. One of the features of the language system is to provide RPC (remote procedure call) based programming interface for method call and query processing. Client-sever model is used for remote database accesses. The database toolkit is also implemented using RPC interface and used to customize several levels of DBMS functions. OODB management can provide a good environment for sharing and reusing of tools
