Web-based real time power system dynamic performance monitoring system

A dynamic performance monitoring system has been installed in an industrial power plant in Texas since 1993. It has been a useful tool for both operators and plant managers. Due to the new generation installation and in-plant expansion, the original monitoring system is no longer adequate for the current power system structure. Due to the electric utility industry restructuring in the state of Texas, power system becomes more dynamic and creates more opportunities for both electricity suppliers and consumers. Currently, both power supplier and demand consumer can participate in the energy and ancillary services (AS) markets to bid for their energy, capacity, and demand. In order to act as an effective market participant, it is necessary to have better understanding regarding the real time plant operation structure and load characteristics. In addition, the corporative offices and plants are resided at different locations. Therefore, a Web-based real time power system dynamic performance monitoring system (DPMS) is developed and installed to replace the original monitoring system. Several distinct features, such as Web access and Global Position System's (GPS) universal timestamp, are implemented in this new development. Through this newly developed monitoring system, the company is able to establish bidding strategy to maximize its profit to participate in the auction market without jeopardizing system operation.
