Error-control codes for byte-oriented systems are presented. The proposed codes are intended for systems wherein the erroneous bits tend to be confined to a small number of bytes. Mathematical techniques are developed for the construction of codes that can detect and correct such errors. Among the various codes presented, the codes for detection and correction of errors confined to a single byte are of particular interest. A decoding algorithm for these codes is also presented
