In the IEEE802.16 standard, the control message, called MAP, is used to schedule the uplink radio frequency between subscriber stations (SSs) and the base station (BS). This paper investigates the uplink access performance of the protocol in terms of average throughput, average delay and collision probability for a fixed number of contention slots, data slots and MAP size. The performance studies are made as a function of payload sizes and the number of SSs. The upstream and downstream channels are separated using time division duplexing. The time division multiple access (TDMA) technique is considered for the upstream channel access.
