Contraction and filamentation phenomena are studied in a neon atmospheric-pressure microwave discharge sustained in a pulsed-power regime. The time evolution of the discharge is observed by means of an intensified charge coupled device (ICCD) and analyzed in terms of nonuniform gas heating and electromagnetic skin effect.
