This paper introduces the history of Trellis-coded modulation (TCM). An optimum scheme based on the predicted SNR and the prediction error variance is derived. Furthermore, the probability density function (PDF) for the rain fading random variable is theoretically derived by assuming that the rain fading can be approximated to a log-normal distribution. Finally, the performance of the adaptive TCM and its loss at high SNRs compared to adaptive uncoded M-QAM is presented.
