Broadband wireless access systems such as the ETSI HIPERMAN and IEEE 802.16a are emerging as part of the 4th generation wireless access infrastructure to cater for the continued demand for high data-rate wireless systems. Meanwhile, physical layer advancements such as space-time coding promise high rate transmissions with high reliability. We characterise the performance of known optimum space-time trellis codes in an OFDM based wireless system complying with the above-mentioned standards. Codes that are designed for quasi-static and fast fading single carrier systems for application in space and time domains are utilised in space and frequency domains where time epochs of the space-time codes are replaced with OFDM tones. The analysis is carried out for different channel conditions, number of Rx antennas and code complexities.
