With rapid growth of networking, in particular the Internet, a large variety of information could be accessed by different users all over the world through a number of software systems. However, the development of corresponding security mechanisms does not parallel with the development of the networks and software systems. Many attacks occur and cause big losses. According to ZDNet Security News dated January 2004, "computer virus attacks cost global businesses an estimated $55 billion in damages in 2003, a sum that is expected to increase this year." In this talk, the author discusses different types of attacks and countermeasures in software system security. The author also presents some research result on secure mobile agent model and intrusion detection system
