The validity of monopole field approximation of the measured extracellular spatial potential patterns generated by spikes was examined. Instead of point source models, a new, counter current model was set up and circumstances of its validity were determined. Based on this model, a new principle for cell-electrode distance estimation was presented, which renewed the possibility of the cell localization. Finally the precision of the new distance estimation method was examined on simulated data and was applied on in vivo measurements.
