M-ary pulse shape modulation (PSM) has been proposed for achieving a high data rate even in severe multipath fading environments, based on the orthogonality of pulse waveforms of prolate spheroidal wave functions (PSWF). With respect to the PSWF-based M-ary PSM proposal, adaptive guard-time and selective-Rake receivers with different combining fingers are also considered The BER performance of the M-ary PSM, the guard-time and the Rake combination are investigated according to Monte-Carlo simulations by using the modified IEEE 802.15.3a S-V UWB multipath channel model. The proposed guard-time scheme has been verified to be effective in overcoming the inter-pulse-interferences. Moreover, it has been found that the PSWF-based pulse waveforms behave better than the conventional Gaussian mono-pulse under multipath fading conditions.
