SSC type NbTi superconductor research program at Teledyne SC

In an ongoing research effort, several multifilament niobium titanium composite billets have been fabricated and processed to make SSC (Superconducting Super Collider) wire. Critical current densities of 3000 A/mm/sup 2/+or-5% and 2950 A/mm/sup 2/+or-5% (5 T, 4.2 K, 10/sup -14/ Omega -m) have been achieved in wires containing 6.5- and 4.8- mu m-diameter filaments, respectively. Piece length and suitability for cable are addressed.
