A unique undergraduate/graduate-level class in electric power system design is described. Students were required to complete a set of projects that were actually in progress at various industrial organizations. Engineers from industry actively advised students and provided a critical evaluation of project results. Such a class provides students with an opportunity to utilize knowledge from theoretical classes and to develop skills in problem solving, communication, and teamwork. In addition, it is shown that, with a good choice of projects, sponsoring organizations can also derive benefits. The type of industry-university cooperation illustrated substantially enhances the education process
