It is argued that in spite of its strengths in the relevant modular technologies for IVHS, North America is behind Europe and Japan in putting these technologies together in large IVHS demonstrations. Recent North American activities are reviewed, and four basic research projects at the University of Michigan in the areas of traffic modeling, human factors, system architecture, and collision prevention are reviewed. It is shown how the system considerations of diversion advice and recommendation technology (DART) have been used as a practical means for the integration of these four projects
