The precision with which footprint patterns produced by planar arrays conform to the desired shapes is dramatically improved by a two-stage array synthesis process in which optimization of the array boundary is followed by optimization of element excitations. The procedure is illustrated by synthesis of arrays with real and complex excitations radiating a rectangular footprint with a 2:1 aspect ratio.
