A 19-element linear array was synthesised that can be switched between narrow-beam and broad-beam patterns with stringent sidelobe level and roll-off requirements using only eight-bit phase shifters. The sensitivity of its performance to errors in element position, excitation phase or amplitude was analysed. Results obtained using simulated annealing and a genetic algorithm for optimisation were very similar, and consumed very similar amounts of computer time.
