Considerations in the design and testing of a three-break 800 kV SF/sub 6/ circuit breaker with ZnO varistors for shunt reactor switching are presented. Included are system and circuit breaker considerations, factory design and analysis, and a description of the field test circuit and instrumentation. Field test results are presented which verify the design and application.<
