All-optical encoding at 160 Gb/s was demonstrated by using four-wave mixing in a gain-clamped semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) with a continuous-wave assist-light injection. Clear eye opening was successfully observed with increasing the assist-light power due to suppression of pattern effect caused by carrier depletion in the SOA.
