Next generation mobile terminals are posited to provide users with configurable and adaptable applications. Existing resource reservation protocols (RSVP) are flow-based and lack the ability to coordinate and update reservations dynamically among flows from the same terminal to achieve better user-perceived performance. We propose a terminal-based resource reservation coordination (TRRC) protocol to extend the existing reservation framework to solve the problem. In particular, we propose a terminal-based optimal resource distribution algorithm to redistribute reserved resources among competing flows at the same terminal. We further define the additional information necessary for the calculation, and modify the RSVP accordingly. Our simulation results show that the new algorithm gives significant gains in user perception compared with the existing RSVP and its extensions.
