Guided-mode grating resonance filters have many practical applications. The design of the optical devices presents a challenging computational problem. In this letter, the problem of determining the resonance frequency is formulated as an eigenvalue problem. A local optimization approach based on Newton's method is proposed to solve the optimal design problem. Our numerical example indicates that the approach is fast and accurate.
