We demonstrate substantial enhancement of maximum transmission distance using a newly developed electronic dispersion compensator (EDC) in combination with a directly modulated distributed feedback laser source. For pseudorandom data at the OC-192 rate, the EDC roughly doubles the dispersion-limited transmission reach to 20 km of standard single-mode fiber.
