Most of the computation and memory usage of the post-compression rate-distortion (PCRD) optimization scheme in JPEG2000 are redundant. In this paper, an efficient rate PCRD scheme based on priority scanning (PS) is proposed to alleviate the problem. By encoding the truncation points in a different order based on the priority information, the proposed method can efficiently reduce the redundancy while keeping the same quality as the conventional PCRD scheme. The proposed scheme can efficiently reduce both the computational cost and working memory size of the entropy coding process by up to 52% and 71%, in the case of 0.25 bpp (1/32) compression, respectively.
