This paper proposes and investigates a new adaptive-equalization approach to multipath fading channels. We consider an adaptive Laguerre equalizer which applies an optimal method based on the squared error to select the pole and an RLS algorithm for adaptation. The proposed scheme is tested by simulations and compared with the conventional equalization schemes. The simulation results show that the adaptive Laguerre equalization will achieve much better performance over the adaptive linear equalization and the adaptive DFE in low SNR or complex multipath conditions, for the Laguerre structure is a compromise between the FIR and UR structures. In addition, since the Laguerre structure is always stable, it can efficiently overcome the error propagation problem.
