In this study, we will generalize the 1D multilevel pattern matching (MPM) code to 2D data, and analyze the compression performance of the 2D MPM code for lossless image compression. We then extend the 2D MPM code to the case of context modelling, yielding a context-dependent 2D MPM code. Its performance will be theoretically analyzed and experimentally evaluated.
