This paper presents an IP-based broadband satellite access (BSA) network architecture for interactive multimedia services with an emphasis on the return link. The functions and architectures of key BSA network components to provide IP Quality of Service support using the differentiated services (diffserv) architecture are presented. Simulation results indicate that the proposed BSA network architecture allows low packet queuing delays to be achieved for all traffic classes when the network is lightly loaded; with high loading, low delays are maintained for the higher-priority traffic classes.
