Taking high bit density as a requirement it has been shown that density ratio, timing window Tw/Tb, and a modified figure of merit DR. Tw/TT are justifiable measures of the performance of practical recording systems. These results apply specifically to a channel 'equalised flat' but different equalisation schemes may lead to modified code requirements.
