This work uses the second order statistics of the signal received by a CDMA mobile to determine what proportion of that signal consist of in-cell interference and what proportion is out-of-cell interference plus thermal noise. A least-squares estimator is derived and compared to the Creamer-Rao lower bound. The interference estimated are incorporated into the CDMA mobile channel decoder in order to improve the performance of convolutional and turbo codes on the CDMA forward link.
