In this paper, a new reliable transport protocol called rate-control snoop is proposed for improving TCP performance over error-prone wireless links. It is implemented at a base station where it performs rate-based transmission control based on characteristics of a data path. The proposed protocol monitors every packet that passes through the path and asks the sender to reduce the transmission rate when packet losses are detected only at a wired link. The performance of the proposed protocol is evaluated by simulations and it shows better throughput than TCP Reno, TCP-Snoop, and end-to-end rate control TCP.
