A power back-off method in the upstream direction of very high-speed digital subscriber line (VDSL) systems is presented. For upstream power back-off, a programmable gain amplifier is utilised for the downstream in the VDSL transmission unit at the remote side. A new upper bound of long-range service is obtained for achievable upstream bit rates in the distributed cable topology.
