Microwave bandpass filters based on microstrip coupled ring resonators including photonic bandgap (PBG) structures to suppress higher harmonics have been investigated. Two topologies based on placing PBG structures into and out of the coupled rings have been considered. A harmonic suppression ratio greater than 20 dB in a flat bandpass filter centred at 2.25 GHz is achieved for both structures.
