This paper investigates the framework of modelling the mechanical failures of a machine under a virtual reality design environment, in which the failure analysis is the important part, especially for the failures between components. The input and output of the mechanical failures analysis are proposed and the relationships of modules related failure analysis are discussed. The general definition of mechanical failures is studied so that they can be translated into a standard format and a VR system can used them to analyse the failures of a machine. The VR environment will let the designer view the failures in their design and provide the intuitive information for the designer to modify the design.
