The paper investigates the integrated routing (IR) algorithm in IP/MPLS over WDM networks, and presents a simple dynamic IR scheme, bandwidth defragmenting method (BDM). It makes use of the statistical information of link-state and resource availability to determine whether to route an arriving label switched path (LSP) request over the existing topology or to open new wavelength paths. The IR algorithm based on BDM can reduce the number of bandwidth fragments and increase the utility of network resource. Simulation results show that the scheme can improve the performance of the network significantly.
