Given the common goals of even coverage, sufficient loudness, naturalness, wide frequency response, good instrumental and tonal balance, and generally pleasing sound, that are common to all outdoor classical music sound systems, the actual design of the individual systems will vary, depending on the size of the audience, background noise conditions encountered, topography of the site, and any requirements for portability. Four systems with common design goals are compared, to show how these factors affect design. All four systems employ high-quality horn treble and bass loudspeakers, one-third-octave-band equalization, and separate bass and treble amplifiers; but in other respects they are quite different.
