Techniques for network reliability enhancement using the virtual path strategy are described. The digital path scheme in synchronous transfer mode (STM) networks and the virtual path scheme in asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) networks are compared in terms of path management. It is shown how the dynamic network reconfiguration capability is effectively provided with the virtual path scheme. Some virtual path applications for network reliability enhancement are proposed
