Voltage regulation is the primary constraint in planning and sizing most rural distribution networks. The allowable voltage regulation limits and the assumptions adopted by distribution network planners and designers significantly affect the capital and lifetime costs. Present research is developing a model to help network planners select parameters to minimise the lifetime cost of networks. The model includes the optimal apportionment of the voltage drops between the medium and low voltage distribution networks for different loads and types of network.
