A simple expression for the diffracted field by a slit or a flanged parallel-plate waveguide is derived from which we can readily evaluate the near field by applying the fast Fourier transform. Some numerical results are presented for the diffracted wave of an isotropic cylindrical wave by an infinitely long slit in a thin conducting screen.
