An essential part of any cellular mobile radio, but one which does not receive a great deal of attention, is the cable network linking the base stations (BS) to the mobile switching centres (MSC). In the case of digital microcellular systems the design of this network is likely to become a crucial element in determining the viability of such systems, because of the greater number of BSs which would need to be connected to an MSC. This paper describes a preliminary study of the statistics of queueing delays expected in a section of a microcellular system comprising a number of BSs linked to the local MSC through a network controller referred to herein as the `group station' (GS)
