The differences between a CAD mapping system and a GIS (graphic information system) or AM/FM system are briefly discussed, and some problems associated with power utility applications design from a software development standpoint are pointed out. The point stressed is that utility data retrieval requirements are tricky or nearly impossible and the benefits and caveats of integrating all of a utility's applications into a true GIS or AM/FM system and keeping data requirements prioritized at the same time are explored. A working AM/FM model, its development and the future possibilities of AM/FM are described
