Discussed are the electric characteristics and installation of a prefabricated joint for 275-kV XLPE (cross-linked polyethylene) cables that control potential distribution with an electrode embedded epoxy unit used in sealing ends and transition joints of cables for voltage of less than 154 kV, as well as with premolded stress relief cones. The interface pressure and the electric stress of each part were taken into account in the design, and it was confirmed by partial discharge, AC breakdown voltage and impulse breakdown voltage tests that the joint had high electric properties. Acoustic emission sensors have been used to predict the breakdown of the insulation
