The possibilities for nonlinear optics in proustite have been explored in a wavelength region previously indicated as having low absorption. We used a 10-W CW CO2laser oscillating on a single transition at 9.2-μ wavelength. The observed values for nonlinearity and absorption are, respectivley, (7.9 \pm 2.0) \times 10^{-23} in MKS units and 0.29 cm-1.
