An overview is given of recent development of subscriber optical cable technologies in Japan. Technologies for constructing a star network using high count fiber cable have been developed. The effect of this development on the cable distribution system, fiber selection, cable structure, splices and connectors, and closure and measurement technology is described. Field trials and features of these technologies are also reviewed.
