A disadvantage of pin lasers is often the bad quality of the laser beam. One aim of this investigation was the improvement of the beam divergence by an irregular arrangement of the needles in the cathode. In addition, the influence of a preionization was studied and the laser output is qualitatively compared with that of a UV-preionized one.
