Statistics of polarization-dependent loss, insertion loss, and signal power in optical communication systems

We present analytical solutions to describe the statistics of signal power and insertion loss due to polarization-dependent loss (PDL) concatenation in communication systems. Using the methods of stochastic differential equations, we show that a system with a large number of low-PDL elements yields a Gaussian distribution for the signal power when it is expressed in units of decibels.
