The optimum (likelihood ratio) design and evaluation of a detection receiver is presented for a signal known except for a class of unimodal distributed phases. Sequential and nonsequential realizations are presented. From the evaluation, we conclude that phase angle information which locates the phase to within65^{circ}is, approximately, for detection, a phase known exactly.
