Using an implantable neuroprosthesis of our design, the effect of various trans-retinal electrode configurations was investigated. A differential response pattern was also obtained between photic and electrical stimulation on the same retina, by way of pharmacological manipulation. It is thought that this is likely to have occurred by way of varying the passive electrical properties of the retina. Based on the results, we propose that a trans-retinal stimulation strategy warrants further investigation.
