A novel high-gradient magnetic separator (HGMS) has been designed to meet the strong requirements of biotech processes to grant high product yield, efficient cleanability and low operating costs. The novel design using a rotary permanent magnet leads to an "on-off" characteristic of the field in the separation zone. This combines the permanent magnet's advantage of low running costs with the solenoid's advantage to flush the filter in place. The utilization of NdFeB magnets into the yoke allows high magnetic inductions leading to efficient and fast separation of magnetic supports used in biotech processes. The bioprocess requirement of complete particle recovery and efficient matrix cleaning after separation was achieved by the integration of an ultrasonication device.
