A network using resistors and active devices that implements a two-dimensional convolution whose shape is similar to a Gaussian is described. The network consists of resistive connections between each node and its nearest and second-nearest neighbors. When integrated on a CMOS chip with photoreception elements, the network forms a monolithic image reception and smoothing system with real-time response. The filter's width, which depends on the ratio of certain resistors, is continuously variable. Networks for other filter shapes are proposed
