The high peak-to-average power ratio of multicarrier signals is one of the greatest difficulties in the implementation of OFDM for wireless LANs. We investigate how we can deal with this problem without major modifications in existing standards. We analyse several methods previously found in the literature, but also propose a new approach consisting of applying different phase shifts to the subcarriers, based on a packetwise minimisation of the clipping distortion.
