Influence of user mobility and simulcast-handoff on the system capacity in pico-cellular environments

For a realistic computer analysis of operating mobile cellular networks the user mobility has to be modeled efficiently. This is especially true in indoor environments, where user movements through pico-cells are restricted by a bounded topography and force a large number of handoffs. Hence, mobility models are to be applied in system analysis tools. This paper explains how a sophisticated random-walk mobility model for efficient computer simulations of user movements in pico-cellular environments is used in a dynamic system simulation tool. The influence of user mobility on the system capacity is investigated and a trade-off between simulcast transmissions for a fast handoff in an indoor environment and a high system load is balanced. Furthermore, theoretical bounds for the influence of user mobility on the system capacity and the probability of interference in pico-cellular indoor environments are given and used to validate the simulation software.
